Assyrian Tiglath-Pileser III managed to arrest the king of Israel and took over his kingdom. Then Shalmaneser V besieged Samaria for three years, but died before entering it. He was followed by Sargon II who ruined Samaria and completely eliminated this kingdom in 722 BC. He deported the Jews and replaced them with new inhabitants from different areas, but the kingdom of Judah remained standing.
